Easter is here and I have a super fluffy, fragrant and delicious recipe; the hot cross bun! They are traditionally served on Good Friday and are inextricably linked to Easter and to Christianity. However, hot cross buns may also have links to the pre-Christian era. 'Cross Buns' were baked to celebrate Eostre, a Germanic Goddess of Fertility, after whom the season of Easter is said to be named.
They are a guaranteed favorite among grandparents and I like to think that it's because it reminds them of a simpler time. However, in my household, everyone seemed to enjoy them quite a bit.
Whatever its origin may be, these buns are enjoyed by people worldwide on this particular holiday. If you're looking to keep busy over the Easter weekend, jump on the hot cross bun train and get baking!
